HISTORY OF THE WALK
When severe budget cuts threatened to end the Women's Athletic
Program at UNO, Connie Claussen and a group of supporters
developed the Women's Walk as a way to continue the athletic
program for young women. The first walk in 1986 had 86 walkers and
raised $12,000! Last year, the UNO Women's Walk had
more than 1,000 participants and raised more than $300,000 gross.
PURPOSE
The UNO Women's Walk is the marquee fundraiser for women's athletics at UNO. The dollars
raised from the Women's Walk provide scholarships for our female student athletes. The 25th UNO Women's Walk will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010. Diet Pepsi, as our Presenting Sponsor, ($30,000) encourages its fellow business colleagues to partner with UNO and support this event. The UNO Women's Walk is the largest event of its kind in the United States.
$40,000 PETER KIEWIT FOUNDATION CHALLENGE GRANT
The Peter Kiewit Foundation will contribute $1.00 for every $5.00
collected by walkers up to a maximum of $20,000. In a special category
of participants, the Peter Kiewit Foundation will contribute an even
match of $1.00 for every $1.00 collected by walkers 21 years
of age or younger up to a maximum of $20,000.
UNO WOMEN'S ATHLETICS WINS ON AND OFF THE COURT
Today, UNO has ten women's sports and a legacy of winning seasons,
championships, and high academic standards. To continue the legacy, we
need your support. By supporting this event, you are supporting some of
Omaha's Best and Brightest! These young ladies excel in the classroom
carrying an average of a 3.30 GPA, with 50% of them on the Deans List.
They win conference and national championships and understand the
importance of giving back to the community that supports them by devoting
countless hours to community service efforts. Many of them hail from
Nebraska and after a wonderful collegiate experience are ready to make
Omaha their home. By supporting this event, you are making an investment
in your metro university and an effort to make our student-athletes dreams
comes true.
UNO WOMEN'S ATHLETICS SUCCESS FACTS
- 66% of our student athletes are Nebraska natives
- 59% have entered the work force in Omaha
- The average GPA of the female student athletes is 3.30 and 30 females made the Chancellor's List
- All student athletes are involved in community service projects: American Cancer Society,
Children's Hospital, Special Olympics, Girl Scouts, and Girls Inc. to name a few
- All student athletes are "Role Models" participating in area public school programs, D.A.R.E.,
reading programs, Optimist Youth Clinics and many more
- 100 female student-athletes were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll (3.0 or above), 56 were named to the MIAA Scholar Honor Roll (3.5 or above) and 6 were named to the MIAA Academic Excellence Honor Roll with a perfect 4.0 GPA Commissioners' Academic Honor Roll
- 22 female student-athletes earned all-MIAA honors
